I never cease to be amazed at my lack of dexterity and training when I encounter a dynamic critical defense situation. Even after training over and over, I still do not perform quite up to my expectations. I guess I’m really not Jack Bauer.
One of the handgun features which I avoid for both regular carry and home defense is external safeties. I have enough to worry about than to forget to disengage the safety before firing! I prefer handguns that are prepared for the fight. The GLOCK is excellent in this regard, which is why it has become “America’s handgun.” Sorry John Browning. There are three safeties in the GLOCK Safe-Action pistol. All are internal and disengaged by the correct handling and firing of the sidearm.
The SIG Sauer Classic Pistol series is composed of many variants, all with a takedown lever, frame-mounted decocker and slide lock lever. None of them have external safeties. No wonder the US Navy SEALS and units representing every branch of the US military carry SIG sidearms.
I particularly dislike the Beretta 92FS (now known as the M9) with its slide-mounted decocker, which activates the safety. We’ve lost some good soldiers due to this poor design.
